Throughout history, many examples of absolute monarchy have been remembered. One of the strongest absolute monarchs was Louis XIV of France. Under his rule, all judicial, executive and legislative powers were consolidated and he exercised final authority in all matters. Louis XIV wielded the power of life and death over his subjects and controlled all matters he considered significant in France during his rule. If he sentenced someone to death, his ruling was final and the condemned had no option for appeal.
Another example of absolute monarchy is the czars of Russia. In Russia, czars ruled as absolute monarchs until 1905 and wielded absolute power over all subjects. It was not until the 1905 Revolution that Russia had a constitution or any sort of representative government. Even after the revolution, the czar continued to be described as an autocrat in the Russian Constitution of 1906. The concept of divine right and the powers of the czars were so ingrained in Russian culture and history that it took significant time for the country to abolish absolutism. Historical Examples:

Some countries that are absolute monarchies include: Brunei, Qatar, Oman, Vatican City, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Swaziland. Brunei’s absolute monarchy has the government, they have a legislative council that has 36 members who get only consultative tasks. His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah is the head of state and has all executive power and emergency power since 1962. Qatar’s leader is Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, the Emir has ALL power. Islamic law is the main legislature. Oman’s politics are styled in absolute monarchy, but unlike the rest they have a separate head of state and head of government, Qaboos bin Said al Said is Sultan and prime minister. Therefore Oman’s absolute monarchy is a little bit different from the rest. The Law of Vatican City, which was put in by Pope John Paul II on the 26 November 2000, consists of 20 paragraphs and is the constitutional law in Vatican City. This tiny country is also considered an Absolute Monarchy. The politics of Saudi Arabia takes place in the context of an absolute monarchy, the government is dominated by the vast royal family, the Al Saud, which has often been divided by internal disputes and into factions. Their ruler is King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud. Politics of the United Arab Emirates takes place in a framework of a federal, presidential, absolute monarchy. The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven monarchies: the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. According to convention, the ruler of Abu Dhabi is President of the United Arab Emirates and the head of state, and the ruler of Dubai is the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, the head of government.Swaziland is an absolute monarchy with constitutional provisions and Swazi law and Custom. The head of state is the king or Ngwenyama (lit. Lion), currently King Mswati III, who ascended to the throne in 1986 after the death of his father King Sobhuza II in 1982 and a period of regency. According to the constitution of Swaziland, the King and Ingwenyama is a symbol of unity and the eternity of the Swazi nation. |
